The OSG 2933201 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 5/8-11 UNC right-hand internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap provides wear resistance and corrosion protection during production tapping operations. It features a modified bottoming chamfer for threading close to the bottom of a blind hole and a 45-degree helix angle that efficiently evacuates chips up and out of the flute. Overall length is 3.813 inches. This tap belongs to OSG Series 290 and is specified to an H3 thread limit with a 3B class of fit, making it appropriate for standard tolerance through-hole and blind-hole applications. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals are the primary users.
This tap is suited for drilling and tapping operations in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading to within a few threads of the hole bottom, which is useful in fixture work, mold components, and close-tolerance assemblies. The spiral flute design directs chips upward, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind holes. It is a single-piece tap intended for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms where coolant flooding or misting is common practice.
Rated for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. No coolant-through capability; external coolant or cutting fluid application is recommended for extended tool life.
This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists familiar with tapping practices and appropriate cutting speeds for the workpiece material. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped before changing tooling. Use appropriate cutting fluid or flood coolant for the material being tapped. Follow ANSI B94.9 and applicable shop safety standards when selecting tap holders and drive torque settings.
