The OSG 2932408 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 1/2-13 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metals. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and coated with titanium carbonitride (TiCN), it delivers extended tool life in demanding production environments. The 45-degree right-hand helix angle evacuates chips upward out of the hole, making it particularly effective in blind-hole applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind bore than a standard plug tap. This tap is sized to produce 3B class-of-fit threads and is ground to an H3 thread limit for consistent dimensional accuracy. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals use this tap in CNC machining centers, lathes, and drill presses.
The OSG 2932408 Series 290 tap is suited for threading alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. It is appropriate for production-volume tapping operations where chip control and thread quality are critical. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a go-to choice when full thread depth near a blind-hole floor is required. It does not support coolant-through delivery, so flood or mist coolant should be directed externally at the cutting zone when tapping harder alloys.
Designed for cutting 1/2-13 UNC internal threads to a 3B class of fit in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard tapping procedures. Secure the workpiece and verify the tap holder is properly aligned before engagement to prevent tap breakage. Power down or de-energize the machine spindle before loading or removing the tap from the holder. Because this tap does not use coolant-through delivery, apply adequate external flood or mist coolant to reduce heat buildup, especially when tapping stainless or hardened steel.
