The OSG 2932001 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 7/16-14 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers solid wear resistance and chip control in production and maintenance threading applications. The 45-degree helix angle drives chips up and out of the flute, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind-hole work. With a modified bottoming chamfer, the tap threads closer to the bottom of a hole than a standard plug chamfer allows. Three flutes and an H3 thread limit tolerance suit general-purpose tapping in ferrous shop materials.
This tap is suited for threading blind holes and through holes in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. The modified bottoming chamfer makes it a practical choice when thread engagement must start near the bottom of a blind hole. Series 290 spiral flute taps are commonly used in machine tapping setups as well as hand-held tapping applications by machinists and maintenance technicians working on fabrication, repair, and tool-and-die work.
Designed for machine and hand tapping of 7/16-14 UNC threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Fits standard tap holders and tapping heads accepting a 0.323-inch shank diameter with a 0.242-inch square drive.
Tapping should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid selection for the workpiece material. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is aligned with the drilled hole before engagement to prevent tap breakage. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace it if damage is visible.
