The OSG 2923608 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 12-24 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN (titanium carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and tool life compared to uncoated HSS tooling. It features a modified bottoming chamfer, 3 right-hand spiral flutes, and a 45-degree helix angle, which helps evacuate chips upward and out of the hole during tapping — a critical advantage in blind-hole applications. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.220 inches. Thread limit is H3, and the class of fit is 2B/3B.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping operations in machine shops, toolrooms, and manufacturing environments. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes while still providing enough lead for stable thread engagement. Material application range includes alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel, making it appropriate for a broad variety of workpiece materials common in job-shop and OEM production settings. It is intended for use in CNC machining centers, turret lathes, and rigid tapping setups where consistent thread quality is required.
Designed for tapping 12-24 UNC threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Part of OSG Series 290. No coolant-through capability; suited for flood or external coolant delivery setups.
This tap is intended for use by machinists in rigid tapping or floating-head tap holders to prevent thread damage from misalignment. Ensure the spindle is stopped and the machine is in a safe state before loading or unloading the tap. Confirm the pre-drill hole diameter matches the standard tap drill size for 12-24 UNC before tapping. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and achieve specified thread class.
