The OSG 2912808 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of metals. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a titanium carbonitride (TiCN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction during tapping operations. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it a practical choice when thread depth is critical. With a 45-degree helix angle and right-hand flute direction, chips are efficiently evacuated upward out of the hole. This tap is a standard tool for machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals working on production or repair applications.
The OSG 2912808 is suited for tapping alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel workpieces. Its modified bottoming chamfer design is particularly useful in blind-hole applications where maximum thread engagement is required near the bottom of the bore. The 2B class of fit produces threads within standard tolerance for most general-purpose fastener applications. This tap fits into standard tapping chucks and tap holders compatible with the shank diameter and square drive dimensions of the Series 290 design.
Compatible with alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and hardened steel. Designed as an OEM-style production tap for standard 8-32 UNC blind-hole and through-hole tapping operations in manual and CNC tapping setups.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tap cycle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 8-32 UNC before starting. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Do not force a tap that has stopped turning - back off and clear chips before continuing.
