The OSG 2892301 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal metric threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It produces an M12x1.75 metric coarse thread form using a 3-flute, plug chamfer geometry that drives chips forward through the hole, making it well-suited for through-hole tapping applications. The tap is manufactured from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E), which provides improved wear resistance and toughness compared to standard M2 HSS. A steam oxide coating is applied to reduce friction and improve chip evacuation. The overall length is 85.70 mm with a thread length of 21.00 mm (1-21/32 inches) and a shank diameter of 0.367 inches. This tool is part of OSG Series 289 and is intended for use by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance professionals.
The OSG 2892301 is suited for through-hole tapping in production and maintenance environments where a reliable metric thread is required. It is compatible with a broad range of materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The plug chamfer makes it appropriate for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping applications where the tap can pass fully through the workpiece. The right-hand thread direction and 6H class of fit make it a standard choice for general metric fastener applications.
Designed for through-hole tapping in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. Part of OSG Series 289.
Install in a tap holder or rigid tapping chuck appropriate for M12 shank diameters; verify spindle alignment before engaging the workpiece. Always use a cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material to extend tool life and maintain thread quality. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap-drill diameter for an M12x1.75 thread before tapping. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements when operating drilling or milling equipment.
