The OSG 2888405 is a spiral point tap designed for threading M8x1.25 metric coarse internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, this plug-chamfer tap drives chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping the flutes clear and reducing the risk of re-cutting. It carries a 6H class of fit, suitable for standard metric fastener assemblies. With a thread length of 1.125 inches (28 millimeters nominal) and an overall length of 2.72 inches (69.1 mm), the 2888405 is sized for general machine and hand tapping in production and maintenance environments. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary installers of this tool.
This tap is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Its spiral point geometry makes it well suited to through-hole threading where chip evacuation ahead of the tap is practical. The TiN coating adds surface hardness and lubricity, extending tool life in higher-volume runs. The right-hand thread direction and plug chamfer make it compatible with standard CNC tapping cycles and hand-tapping operations where a starting lead is acceptable.
Designed for threading M8x1.25 metric coarse through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Not rated for coolant-through spindles. Oversize and interrupted-thread variants are not applicable to this part number.
A licensed machinist or qualified technician should select the correct tap drill size for M8x1.25 threads before use. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap handle is properly aligned to avoid tap breakage. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material; do not run this tap dry in steel. Replace the tap at the first sign of squealing, increased torque, or thread-form degradation to avoid breaking the tool in the hole.
