The OSG 2886801 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 12-24 UNC holes in a range of metallic workpieces. It drives chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, keeping the flutes clear and allowing use in through-hole applications without frequent withdrawal. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a steam oxide finish, this tap provides moderate lubricity and corrosion resistance suited to general shop and field use. The 2-flute geometry and plug chamfer make it a standard choice for production and maintenance threading where consistent 2B class of fit is required. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.58 inches and a shank diameter of 0.22 inches.
This tap is intended for threading through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The plug chamfer style requires a few thread lead-in before full cutting begins, making it suitable for through-holes rather than blind bores. Typical install scenarios include maintenance and repair work, OEM fabrication, and production threading where a 12-24 UNC 2B fit is specified. The right-hand thread direction matches standard fastener orientation. No coolant-through capability is present, so conventional flood coolant or cutting oil applied at the entry point is the preferred lubrication method.

This tap is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and skilled tradespeople using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid-tapping cycle. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is started square to the hole axis to prevent tap breakage. Apply cutting oil or appropriate tapping fluid before and during the operation; do not run dry on steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged cutting edge on a small-diameter tap can lead to breakage and difficult extraction.
