The OSG 2885901 is a spiral point tap designed to cut 5/16-24 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. It features a plug chamfer for gradual thread engagement and a steam oxide coating that improves lubricity and reduces chip welding during the tapping process. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel, providing the hardness and wear resistance needed for repetitive production tapping. With 3 flutes and a spiral point geometry, it pushes chips ahead of the cut rather than packing them into the flute, making it well suited to through-hole work in softer metals and steel.
The OSG 2885901 is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. It is commonly used in machine shop, maintenance, and light manufacturing environments where 5/16-24 UNF threaded holes are required in through-hole configurations. The plug chamfer makes it appropriate for both hand tapping and machine tapping setups where the tap enters a clear through-hole.

Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for a 2B class of fit before tapping. Do not reverse the tap under load without first relieving chip pressure to avoid tap breakage.
