The OSG 2884101 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 0-80 UNF internal threads in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. It carries a 2B class of fit, which is the standard tolerance for general-purpose unified inch threads. At 1.625 inches overall length with a 5/16-inch thread length and a 0.141-inch shank diameter, it is sized for precision work in small fastener applications. Right-hand thread direction is standard. Machine shops, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die tradespeople are the primary installers.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The 0-80 UNF thread size is common in instrument manufacturing, electronics assembly, optical equipment, and fine-pitch fastener applications where a standard unified fine thread is required at the smallest end of the inch-thread range. Two flutes keep the tap profile compact for work in tight geometries. The plug chamfer provides a progressive lead-in that distributes cutting load across several threads.
Rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Designed to cut 0-80 UNF internal threads to a 2B class of fit in through-hole applications.
This tap is installed by a machinist or maintenance technician using a tapping head, CNC machine, or hand tap wrench. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 0-80 UNF before tapping. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread quality. Never reverse a spiral point tap under power without confirming the machine cycle is programmed to retract correctly, as tap breakage at this thread size is difficult to recover from.
