The OSG 2880401 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-hole applications. It uses a plug chamfer to guide thread engagement and a spiral point geometry to push chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping flutes clear during production tapping. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles moderate heat and wear in typical threading operations. The 10-24 UNC thread form and 3B class of fit make it a standard choice for machine screws and fastener holes in general fabrication and assembly work. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a thread length of 0.54 inches.
This tap is suited for threading through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The 2-flute spiral point design is most effective in through-hole configurations where chips can exit forward rather than back up into the flute. Typical applications include CNC tapping, manual tapping with a tap handle, and production drilling-and-tapping sequences in light manufacturing and machine shop environments. Right-hand thread direction matches standard fastener orientation.
Suitable for threading 10-24 UNC through-holes in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Designed for use with standard tap holders, quick-change tapping heads, and manual tap handles accepting a 0.194-inch shank diameter.
Spiral point taps are installed by licensed machinists or experienced fabricators using a tap wrench, drill press tapping attachment, or CNC tapping cycle. Always ensure the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 10-24 UNC before threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Back the tap out periodically when tapping manually to break and clear chips, and never force a tap against resistance.
