The OSG 2868908 is a bottoming thread forming tap designed for M8x1.25 metric coarse threads with a 6H class of fit. Built from high-speed steel with a TiCN coating, it cold-forms internal threads rather than cutting them, producing stronger thread forms with no chips to clear. The overall length is 2.953 inches with a thread length of 0.591 inches and a tapping depth of 1.126 inches. The shank diameter measures 0.318 inches. This tap is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series and is suited for machinists and maintenance technicians working on blind-hole threading applications requiring close-tolerance metric threads.
This tap is designed for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The bottoming chamfer, with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads, allows the tap to reach close to the bottom of a blind hole, making it well suited for components where maximum thread engagement depth is required in tight workpiece configurations. It carries the right-hand thread direction and is intended for use in production and maintenance environments where chip-free thread forming is preferred over traditional cutting taps.
Designed for blind-hole thread forming in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces requiring M8x1.25 metric coarse internal threads at a 6H class of fit.
Thread forming taps should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping speeds and feed rates for the workpiece material. Always ensure the spindle and workpiece are properly secured before tapping operations, and confirm correct tap alignment to avoid tap breakage in blind holes. Use an appropriate tapping fluid or lubricant suitable for the workpiece material, even though coolant-through is not required for this tap. Follow machine tool manufacturer guidelines for torque limits when using in CNC or manual tapping equipment.
