The OSG 2865808 is a thread forming tap designed for blind hole threading in a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It uses a cold-forming process rather than cutting, displacing material to produce strong, work-hardened threads without chips. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and carries a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and reduced friction. It is configured in a bottoming chamfer style with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. At 2.5 inches overall length with a 0.594-inch thread length, this tap is sized for standard machine or hand tapping setups. It is used by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals working in HVAC, plumbing, and light fabrication applications.
The OSG 2865808 is intended for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The bottoming chamfer makes it well suited for applications where full thread depth close to the bottom of the hole is required. The right-hand thread direction and 1/4-20 UNC 2B class of fit are standard specifications across a wide range of industrial, mechanical, and trade assembly work. It operates without coolant-through capability and is best suited for use with appropriate cutting fluid applied externally.

Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill hole, which is larger than a standard cut tap drill size - consult a tap drill chart specific to thread forming operations before drilling. Secure the workpiece and use a calibrated tap handle or machine tapping attachment to maintain axial alignment. Apply a suitable tapping fluid or cutting oil externally before and during tapping, especially in steel. Do not back the tap out without breaking torque first, as thread forming taps are more sensitive to breakage under side load than cutting taps.
