The OSG 2865605 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 10-32 UNF internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps cold-form the thread profile by displacing material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips. This tap is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating for improved wear resistance and tool life. With a bottoming chamfer of 1.5 to 2 threads, it is suited for threading close to the bottom of blind holes where full thread engagement is required. Overall length is 2.375 inches with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches.
The 2865605 is intended for use in blind hole threading operations on aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. It is commonly used in production and maintenance machining environments where 10-32 UNF threaded fastener holes are required in ferrous and non-ferrous components. The right-hand thread direction and 2B class of fit make it compatible with standard 10-32 UNF fasteners. Machinists and toolmakers working on precision assemblies in HVAC, electrical, and mechanical fabrication will find this tap suited to close-tolerance threading work.
Designed for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Produces 10-32 UNF internal threads with a 2B class of fit for use with standard 10-32 UNF fasteners.
Thread forming taps require adequate lubrication and proper tap drill size selection for the material being tapped — consult a thread forming tap drill chart before drilling pilot holes, as forming taps require a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Secure the workpiece and align the tap perpendicular to the hole before starting. Use appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material. Handle HSS taps carefully to avoid chipping the flute form; do not apply excessive torque.
