The OSG 2865600 is a thread forming tap designed for creating 10-32 UNF internal threads in blind hole applications. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. This tap is configured with a bottoming chamfer of 1.5 to 2 threads, allowing threads to be formed close to the bottom of a blind hole. Built from high-speed steel with a bright finish, the 2865600 measures 2.375 inches in overall length with a shank diameter of 0.194 inches. It is suited for use by machinists, maintenance technicians, and HVAC or mechanical trade professionals working with threaded fastener repairs or new assemblies.
This tap is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel — material application codes P and N. The bottoming chamfer configuration makes it the right choice when threading must extend to near the bottom of a blind hole where a taper or plug tap cannot reach full thread depth. It is part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series, which is designed specifically for thread forming in ductile metals. Typical applications include tapping threaded holes in HVAC equipment brackets, sheet metal assemblies, and mechanical components requiring clean, chip-free threads.
Designed for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces requiring a 10-32 UNF, 2B class of fit thread. Part of the OSG HY-PRO NRT series (Series 285).
Thread forming taps require a properly sized forming tap drill — consult a thread forming drill chart for the correct diameter before tapping, as forming taps use a larger pilot hole than cutting taps. Apply appropriate tapping fluid for the material being tapped, particularly when working with aluminum or steel. Secure the workpiece firmly and use a calibrated tap wrench or machine spindle to maintain axial alignment throughout the tapping operation. Do not use this tap in cast iron or hardened steels, as thread forming requires ductility in the base material.
