The OSG 2865005 is a bottoming-style thread forming tap designed for 6-32 UNC internal threads with a 2B class of fit. Unlike cutting taps, thread forming taps displace material rather than cutting it, producing stronger threads with no chips to clear. Manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, the 2865005 offers improved wear resistance and lubricity for extended tool life. With an overall length of 2 inches and a tapping depth of 0.685 inches, it is sized for compact, precise work in blind hole applications. Licensed tradespeople and machining professionals use this tap in production and repair contexts.
The OSG 2865005 is suited for blind hole threading in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The bottoming chamfer, with 1.5 to 2 chamfered threads, allows the tap to form threads close to the bottom of a blind hole — critical in tight assemblies where thread engagement depth is limited. This makes it a practical choice for HVAC component fabrication, electrical panel work, and general mechanical repair where 6-32 UNC fasteners are standard. It is sold individually and carries the OSG HY-PRO NRT trade designation.
Designed for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces requiring 6-32 UNC internal threads with a 2B class of fit in blind hole configurations.
Thread forming taps require a properly sized form tap drill — do not use a standard tap drill chart sized for cutting taps, as the recommended hole diameter differs. Secure the workpiece and use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping lubricant recommended for the workpiece material before starting. Apply steady, consistent torque with a calibrated tap wrench or CNC tapping cycle to avoid tap breakage in small-diameter applications. Ensure the spindle or wrench is properly aligned to the hole axis before engaging the tap.
