The OSG 2843801 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 3/4-16 UNF right-hand internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles through-hole applications where chip flow forward ahead of the cutting edges is practical and efficient. The plug chamfer distributes the cutting load across several leading threads, making it suitable for production threading and general-purpose machine tapping. It carries a 2B class of fit and H5 thread limit, giving machinists the tolerance control needed for standard fastener fitment. Overall length is 4.252 inches with a thread length of 1.21 inches and a shank diameter of 0.59 inches.
This tap is used in CNC machining centers, manual mills, drill presses, and tapping machines where through-hole 3/4-16 UNF threads are required. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward through the hole rather than packing them into flutes, which makes it well suited for medium- to high-volume production runs in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Typical installers include machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians working in job shops, manufacturing facilities, and industrial maintenance environments. It is sold individually and fits Series 280 tooling context.
Designed for threading 3/4-16 UNF through-holes in aluminum, cast iron, alloy steel, die steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel workpieces. OSG Series 280.
Install in a rigid tapping chuck or floating tap holder sized for the 0.59-inch shank diameter. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is aligned axially with the pre-drilled hole before engaging the tap. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material — sulfurized oil for ferrous metals and a water-soluble coolant for aluminum. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each production run and replace at the first sign of edge deterioration to avoid thread damage or tap breakage.
