The OSG 2843200 is a spiral point tap designed for machine tapping of through holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E), it delivers increased wear resistance and heat resistance compared to standard M2 HSS. The 5/8-11 UNC thread form, plug chamfer, and 3-flute geometry combine to push chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, keeping flutes clear and reducing the risk of re-cutting. The H5 thread limit and 2B class of fit target standard commercial tolerances for through-hole threaded connections. Right-hand cutting with no coolant-through design makes this tap suited for flood or mist coolant setups.
This tap is used in production and maintenance machining environments where through-hole tapping at 5/8-11 UNC is required. Compatible materials include aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The plug chamfer requires a small lead-in hole depth beyond the required thread length, making it best suited for through-hole applications rather than blind holes. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians using CNC machining centers, drill presses with tapping attachments, or hand tapping setups.
Designed as a standard 5/8-11 UNC spiral point plug tap for through-hole tapping in aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. Part of OSG Series 280.
This tap is installed by machinists or toolroom technicians in CNC tapping cycles, rigid tapping setups, or manual tapping fixtures. Always ensure the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 5/8-11 UNC before tapping. Secure the workpiece and verify spindle alignment before engaging the tap to avoid tap breakage or thread damage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant for the workpiece material — flood coolant or cutting oil is recommended for steel and stainless applications.
