The OSG 2842400 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It produces a 1/2-13 UNC thread profile with a right-hand thread direction and a plug chamfer for standard through-hole tapping applications. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a bright finish, it carries an H5 thread limit and a 2B class of fit. With an overall length of 3.374 inches and a thread length of 0.921 inches, this tap is sized for typical production and maintenance threading work. Installation is performed by licensed machinists, toolroom technicians, and maintenance mechanics.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in both production and job-shop environments. Its three-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it effective in through-holes where chip evacuation would otherwise be a concern. Rated for use in aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel, it covers a broad range of workpiece materials encountered in general machining and maintenance applications.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 1/2-13 UNC threads; compatible with aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron workpieces as stated by the manufacturer.
This tap should be installed and operated by qualified machinists or maintenance mechanics familiar with threading operations. Always ensure the workpiece and tapping fixture are securely clamped before beginning. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. Power down and de-energize any machine spindle before changing or inspecting the tap.
