The OSG 2841801 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 3/8-24 UNF internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance during cutting operations. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well-suited for through-hole threading where chip evacuation is critical. With a 3-flute design, H5 thread limit, and right-hand thread direction, it produces consistent, accurate threads without oversizing. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and maintenance mechanics are the primary users of this tap.
This tap is intended for use in through-hole threading operations across a wide range of workpiece materials. The HSS-E construction and steam oxide finish support use in aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It is commonly used in production machining, maintenance and repair, and tool-and-die work where a 3/8-24 UNF fine thread is required. The plug chamfer style makes it appropriate for starting threads from a flat or pre-drilled surface where a full-depth thread is needed from the entry side.
Designed for threading 3/8-24 UNF through-holes in workpiece materials including aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron.
This tap is installed by machinists or tool-and-die technicians using a tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC spindle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill diameter for 3/8-24 UNF before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life. Follow all machine guarding and lockout procedures when tapping on power equipment.
