The OSG 2841201 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 5/16-24 UNF right-hand threads in through-hole applications. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, it delivers improved lubricity and chip evacuation compared to standard uncoated taps. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it well suited for through-hole threading where chip packing is a concern. With a thread limit of H5 and 3 flutes, this tap holds tight tolerances and is appropriate for production and maintenance threading work performed by machinists, tool-and-die technicians, and trade professionals who thread their own fittings or brackets.
The 2841201 is suited for threading aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. Its 5/16-24 UNF pitch makes it a common choice for fine-thread fastener applications in HVAC equipment frames, electrical enclosures, plumbing fixture hardware, and mechanical assemblies where a stronger thread engagement is needed compared to coarse-pitch UNC alternatives. It is used in both shop and field environments.

This tap is installed and operated by machinists or trade technicians using a standard tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC machine spindle. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the tap is properly aligned before starting the cut to avoid tap breakage. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or hardened steel. Reverse the tap periodically to break chips when operating manually in tougher materials.
