The OSG 2833208 is a spiral point tap designed for right-hand threading in a 5/8-11 UNC configuration. It is manufactured from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) and finished with a Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) coating to extend tool life in demanding cutting applications. The tap features a plug chamfer and three flutes, producing a thread to a 3B class of fit with an H3 thread limit. With an overall length of 3.811 inches and a thread length of 1.91 inches, it is sized for general-purpose through-hole tapping across a wide range of metals. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is suited for production and maintenance tapping operations in residential shops, commercial machine shops, and industrial facilities. It is rated for use in aluminum, cast iron, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the tap, making it most effective in through-hole applications where chip evacuation in front of the cutting edge is practical. The TiCN coating reduces friction and heat buildup, supporting longer run lengths between tool changes when tapping harder or abrasive materials.
Designed for use in standard tapping chucks, tension-compression holders, and rigid tapping spindles accepting a 0.48-inch shank diameter. Suitable for through-hole tapping in the material types listed in the application paragraph above. No interrupted-thread or oversize designation applies to this tap.
Installation and use should be performed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians familiar with tapping speeds, feeds, and cutting fluid requirements for the workpiece material. Always secure the workpiece fully before tapping and confirm spindle alignment to avoid tap breakage. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the material being threaded. Do not force a tap that has stopped advancing, as this indicates chip packing or misalignment and will likely result in tool breakage.
