The OSG 2832408 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 1/2-13 UNC holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Made from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) and finished with a Titanium Carbonitride (TiCN) coating, this tap delivers extended tool life and improved wear resistance compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The plug chamfer (3-5 thread lead) makes it suitable for through-hole tapping applications where the tap can pass completely through the workpiece. It is ground to an H3 thread limit and meets a 3B class of fit, producing threads within the tolerance range required for standard UNC fastener engagement. Machinists, toolroom operators, and production floor personnel are the primary users.
The 2832408 is well suited for through-hole tapping operations in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping setups. Its three-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, reducing chip clogging in blind-hole or through-hole production runs. The TiCN coating reduces built-up edge on materials such as aluminum and stainless steel. Stated material applications include aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron, making this a versatile tap for general-purpose and production machining environments.

Installation of this tap should be performed by a qualified machinist following safe tapping practices. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and that the spindle or tapping head is properly aligned with the drilled pilot hole before engagement. Power down or disengage the tapping cycle before reversing to back out the tap. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping lubricant appropriate for the workpiece material to reduce heat and extend tap life, even though this tap does not have coolant-through capability.
