The OSG 2832008 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 7/16-14 UNC right-hand internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) and finished with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, this tap delivers improved wear resistance and reduced friction compared to uncoated HSS tooling. The plug chamfer provides a gradual cutting action suited for through-hole applications. With 3 flutes and an H3 thread limit, it maintains tight dimensional control on threaded features. Overall length is 3.157 inches, with a thread length of 0.858 inches and a shank diameter of 0.323 inches. Machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians install this tap by hand or with a tapping machine.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in a variety of materials including aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and cast iron. The TiCN coating makes it particularly effective in abrasive and harder materials where uncoated taps wear prematurely. Typical applications include production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and fabrication shops requiring consistent UNC thread quality in 7/16 inch bores.
Designed as a standard 7/16-14 UNC spiral point plug tap fitting conventional tap holders, tapping heads, and CNC rigid tapping spindles that accept the 0.323-inch shank diameter of this OSG Series 280 tool.
This tap is installed by qualified machinists or maintenance technicians using a hand tap wrench, tapping stand, or CNC tapping cycle with appropriate feed-per-revolution synchronization. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap drill size for 7/16-14 UNC before starting. Apply a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound rated for the workpiece material, especially when tapping stainless steel or hardened steel. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping after extended use and replace before thread quality degrades.
