The OSG 2823401 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 10-24 UNC holes in a wide range of metals. Manufactured from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, it delivers consistent thread quality in materials from low-carbon and medium-carbon steels to alloy steel, cast iron, stainless steel, die steel, and aluminum. The plug chamfer eases entry into through-hole applications, while the 3-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone to reduce clogging during production tapping. Thread limit is H11, class of fit 2B, for right-hand threads. Licensed HVAC technicians, plumbers, electricians, and machinists reach for this tap when field repairs or fabrication require threading new holes to a consistent standard.
This tap is suited for through-hole threading operations in both manual and machine tapping setups. It handles a broad material application range including aluminum, stainless steel, hardened steel, high-carbon and low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron. The steam oxide finish reduces friction and offers a degree of corrosion resistance during storage and use. At 2.374 inches overall length with a 0.492-inch thread length and a 0.194-inch shank diameter, it fits standard tap holders for size 10 tapping work on the bench or at the machine.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement spiral point tap for 10-24 UNC threading applications across aluminum, stainless steel, alloy steel, cast iron, and carbon steel workpieces in standard tap holders accepting a 0.194-inch shank.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or trade professional familiar with hand and machine tapping procedures. Always secure the workpiece and ensure the spindle or tap handle is properly aligned before starting the thread to avoid tap breakage. Apply a suitable cutting fluid for the workpiece material before and during tapping. Never reverse a spiral point tap under power without confirming it is clear of chips to prevent breakage in the hole.
