The OSG 2817801 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap delivers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance during through-hole tapping operations. The spiral point geometry pushes chips ahead of the tap and out of the hole, reducing chip packing and allowing consistent cutting at production feed rates. With an H5 thread limit, it holds close tolerances suitable for precision fastener applications. Licensed HVAC techs, machinists, and maintenance professionals working on sheet metal enclosures, electrical panels, and mechanical assemblies routinely use this style of tap.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in residential and commercial maintenance environments as well as light manufacturing. The 8-32 UNC thread form is one of the most common machine screw threads encountered in electrical enclosures, HVAC equipment panels, control boxes, and plumbing fixture hardware. Compatible material applications include aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and cast iron, making it a versatile choice when a single tap needs to handle mixed-material work orders.
Designed as a standard 8-32 UNC spiral point plug tap for use in through-hole tapping operations across aluminum, carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steel, die steel, hardened steel, and cast iron workpieces. No coolant-through capability; suited for hand tapping and machine tapping with applied cutting fluid.
This tap is installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and trade professionals using a standard tap handle, tapping fixture, or CNC/manual drill press with appropriate tapping attachment. Always use a suitable cutting fluid matched to the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Ensure the tap is started square to the drilled hole to prevent tap breakage and thread misalignment. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping; never attempt to back out a broken tap without proper extraction tooling.
