The OSG 2817501 is a spiral point tap designed for machine tapping of through holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide finish, it delivers improved lubricity and corrosion resistance compared to uncoated tooling. The plug chamfer provides gradual thread engagement, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip clearance is critical. With a 6-32 UNC thread form, 2 flutes, and an H6 thread limit, this tap produces consistent, on-tolerance threads in production environments. It is used by machinists and maintenance technicians working in metalworking, fabrication, and repair operations.
This tap is intended for right-hand, through-hole tapping at the 6-32 UNC thread size. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward and out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in automated or hand-fed machine setups. It is commonly used on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines in light to medium production work. The H6 thread limit accommodates standard 6-32 fastener fits. The steam oxide coating reduces friction and aids in cutting performance across the range of supported work materials without through-coolant.
Designed for through-hole tapping applications in aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and hardened steel. No specific machine model compatibility was stated by the manufacturer.
This tap is installed and operated by machinists or maintenance technicians using a tapping machine, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench. Ensure the spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the work material and tap size before starting the cut. Use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped even though the tap does not require through-coolant. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades to avoid tap breakage in the workpiece.
