The OSG 2809401 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC holes in a wide range of metals. Spiral point geometry pushes chips forward through the hole, making this tap well suited for through-hole threading applications where chip evacuation is critical. The 3-flute configuration provides strong cutting action with adequate chip clearance. Manufactured from 3% vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) for improved wear resistance and toughness over standard M2 HSS, and finished with a steam oxide coating that reduces friction and helps resist corrosion during use and storage. The H2 thread limit holds a close tolerance for consistent thread quality.
This tap is appropriate for through-hole tapping in a broad range of workpiece materials including low-carbon, medium-carbon, high-carbon, and alloy steels, die steel, hardened steel, stainless steel, cast iron, and aluminum. The plug chamfer (3-5 thread lead) makes it the standard choice for through-hole production tapping on manual machines, drill presses, CNC machining centers, and tapping arms. It is installed and used by machinists, toolmakers, and maintenance professionals working in fabrication, manufacturing, and field repair environments.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 1/4-20 UNC threads in aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron workpieces. Part of the OSG Series 280 tap line.
Secure the tap in a properly sized tap holder or floating tap chuck to prevent breakage from misalignment. Always use the correct cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material before beginning the threading operation. De-energize and lock out any power tool or machine before changing taps. Follow applicable machine shop safety standards and manufacturer feed-rate recommendations for the specific workpiece material.
