The OSG 2630005 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 1/4-20 UNC through-holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a plug chamfer, 3-flute geometry, and a titanium nitride (TiN) coating over a vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) body. The spiral point design pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, making it well suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation is critical. At 3.15 inches overall length with a 0.598-inch thread length, it fits standard tap holders and CNC tooling setups. Right-hand thread direction. Coolant-through capability supports higher feed rates and extended tool life in production environments.
This tap is appropriate for threading operations in both manual and CNC machining applications. Suitable material applications include aluminum, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The TiN coating reduces friction and improves wear resistance, which is particularly beneficial when running production volumes or working with abrasive materials. The 2B class of fit meets standard UNC fastener tolerances for general mechanical assembly. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and CNC operators in manufacturing and maintenance environments are the primary users.
Designed for use in standard tap holders and CNC toolholding systems accepting a 0.255-inch shank diameter. Cuts 1/4-20 UNC threads to a 2B class of fit in through-hole configurations across the listed material types.
This tap is installed by a machinist or tooling technician using a tap holder, tapping head, or CNC machine spindle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed and feed rate are set per the tool manufacturer's recommendations for the material being tapped. Use appropriate cutting fluid or coolant to optimize performance and tool life. Inspect tap condition regularly; a worn or damaged tap should be replaced before continuing production to avoid thread damage or tap breakage.
