The OSG 2230001 is a spiral flute tap designed to cut 1/4-20 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous metals. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel and finished with a steam oxide coating, it offers improved wear resistance and chip evacuation compared to standard high-speed steel taps. The 45-degree helix angle drives chips up and out of the flute, making this tap well suited for blind-hole applications where chip packing is a concern. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading closer to the bottom of a blind hole than a plug chamfer. Three flutes provide a balance of chip clearance and thread form support. Licensed machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is intended for use in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel. The modified bottoming style makes it a second-operation tap, typically following a spiral point or plug tap to establish the thread and then finishing near the bottom of a blind hole. The 2B class of fit produces a standard tolerance internal thread suitable for general mechanical assemblies requiring a free-running fit with a 2A external thread. It is appropriate for both production environments and jobsite repair work where precise thread engagement depth is required.
Designed for cutting 1/4-20 UNC 2B internal threads in alloy steel, carbon steel, cast iron, die steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. Not rated for coolant-through use.
Use in a tapping chuck, CNC machining center, or hand tap wrench rated for the torque required by the workpiece material. Always secure the workpiece before tapping and apply appropriate cutting fluid to extend tool life, particularly in stainless steel or hardened materials. The modified bottoming style is a second-operation tap — a plug or spiral point tap should be used first to start and develop the thread before switching to this tap to finish near the hole bottom. Do not exceed the recommended feed rate for the material, as taps cannot back out chips if broken below the surface.
