The OSG 215-1730 is a high-speed steel jobber-length drill bit designed for general-purpose drilling in a wide range of metalworking applications. It carries a Number 17 wire gauge size, corresponding to 0.1730 decimal inch (4.39 mm) in diameter. The 135-degree split point with web thinning reduces walking at entry and lowers thrust requirements compared to a standard 118-degree point. The bright, uncoated finish suits dry or flood-coolant operations. Overall length is 2-3/16 inches with a 1-1/8-inch flute length. Right-hand cutting direction with a slow spiral and tapered web configuration. Machinists, tool-and-die workers, and maintenance technicians reach for this bit when drilling ferrous and non-ferrous materials in production or repair settings.
The 215-1730 is suited for drilling steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum silicate, nickel alloy, titanium, and titanium alloy. The 5xD flute-to-diameter ratio provides chip clearance in moderately deep holes. The straight-cylindrical shank seats in standard drill chucks, collet chucks, and drill press quills without adapters. This bit fits bench drills, knee mills, CNC machining centers, and hand-held drill motors used in fabrication shops, maintenance departments, and field service applications.
Designed as a general-purpose jobber drill for use in standard drill chucks accepting a 0.1728-inch straight-cylindrical shank. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, alloy steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum silicate, nickel alloy, titanium, and titanium alloy per OSG Series 215 specifications.
Installation is performed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard keyed or keyless drill chuck. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the chuck is tightened before operation. Select spindle speed and feed rate appropriate for the workpiece material and machine type; consult published speeds-and-feeds tables for high-speed steel tooling. Inspect the cutting edges for chipping or wear before each use and replace if the point geometry is compromised.
