The OSG 1983500 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads in a wide range of metals. It produces M18x2.50 Metric Coarse threads using a 3-flute, plug chamfer geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, making it well suited for through-hole tapping operations. The tap is manufactured from High Speed Steel with a bright finish and is built to the D7 thread limit. Overall length is approximately 12.4 mm. Shank diameter measures 0.5420 inches (13.7668 mm) and the square drive size is 15.875 mm. Thread length is 1-13/16 inches (27.7 mm). Licensed machinists, tool and die makers, and maintenance technicians are the primary users.
This tap is intended for through-hole tapping applications across a broad material spectrum. It is rated for use in aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The plug chamfer style requires a clear exit path for chips, making it best applied where the workpiece allows the tap to pass fully through. It does not feature coolant-through capability or interrupted thread geometry, so it is best suited for standard machine or hand-tapping setups where conventional cutting fluid is applied externally.
Rated for tapping aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, high-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Part of OSG Series 142.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations and feed-rate control. Before tapping, ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle speed is set appropriately for the material being cut. Apply cutting fluid externally throughout the operation to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Never reverse direction under load without fully releasing torque, as this can cause tap breakage in harder materials.
