The OSG 1982202 is a spiral point tap designed for threading metric coarse M3.5x0.60 holes in production and job-shop environments. Built from high-speed steel (HSS) with an elektraLUBE coating, it reduces friction and heat buildup during threading operations, extending tool life in both hand and machine tapping applications. The plug chamfer (6 to 8 lead threads) allows progressive thread engagement, making it well suited for through-hole tapping. With a D4 thread limit and a 6H class of fit, this tap produces threads that meet standard metric tolerance requirements for general mechanical assembly. Overall length is 2 inches with a thread length of 0.6875 inches.
This tap is intended for threading through-holes in a wide range of workpiece materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, hardened steel, cast iron, aluminum, and cast aluminum. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines in both production and repair environments. The 2-flute spiral point geometry pushes chips forward through the hole, which helps prevent chip packing in through-hole applications and contributes to cleaner thread formation.
Compatible with workpiece materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, hardened steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Fits standard tap holders and tapping heads sized for M3.5 taps. No coolant-through capability; suitable for external flood coolant or manual lubrication applications.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by a machinist or tooling technician familiar with tapping operations and machine setup. Ensure the spindle and workpiece are fully secured before beginning the tapping cycle, and confirm that spindle speed and feed rate are appropriate for the material and tap size per the manufacturer or shop standards. For machine tapping, use a rigid tapping cycle or floating tap holder as applicable to the machine control. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace when thread quality degrades.
