The OSG 1981302 is a spiral point tap designed for threading M8x1.25 metric coarse threads in through-hole applications. It features a plug chamfer for standard entry and a 2-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting action, reducing chip packing and improving thread quality in production environments. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel (HSS) and carries an elektraLUBE coating that reduces friction and extends tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. Thread limit is D5 with a 6H class of fit, delivering consistent tolerance control for standard metric fastener applications. Licensed machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers of this tap in CNC and manual tapping operations.
This tap is suited for threading operations in both production and job-shop environments. It performs in a wide range of materials including aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. The spiral point design makes it particularly effective in through-hole applications where chips can be driven forward and cleared from the cut zone. It is well suited for use in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping arms where controlled feed rates and rigid setups are available.
Designed for threading M8x1.25 metric coarse through-holes in workpieces made from aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, and hardened steel. Compatible with standard tap holders and chucks sized for M8 shank tooling in CNC and manual tapping setups.
This tap should be installed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician familiar with threading operations and proper tap holder selection. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tapping setup is rigid before initiating the cut to prevent tap breakage. For CNC applications, verify that the machine spindle speed and feed rate are matched to the tap manufacturer's recommendations for the specific workpiece material. Inspect the tap for wear or damage before each use, and never force a tap that has stopped advancing under normal cutting load.
