The OSG 1972002 is a straight flute bottoming tap designed for cutting metric coarse internal threads in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It produces M12x1.75 threads to a 6H class of fit, delivering consistent dimensional accuracy for precision fastener applications. The tap is manufactured from high-speed steel and features 4 flutes with a right-hand thread direction. Its bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes, making it well suited for applications where thread depth is critical. Overall length is 3.375 inches with a thread length of 1.656 inches. A D6 thread limit designation supports proper fit when tapping medium-tolerance threaded assemblies.
This tap is used in machine shop, toolroom, and production environments where metric fastener threads must be cut into blind or through holes. It is appropriate for manual tapping and machine tapping operations on aluminum, cast aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and high-carbon steel workpieces. The bottoming chamfer geometry makes it the correct choice when full thread depth must be achieved near the bottom of a blind hole, typically used as the final tap in a tap sequence following a taper or plug tap.

Machinists and toolroom technicians should secure the workpiece fully before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the hole axis to prevent tap breakage. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread finish. When used in a blind hole, clear chips frequently to prevent packing at the bottom of the hole. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and do not apply excessive torque when threading hard materials.
