The OSG 1810400 is a hand STI tap designed to cut screw thread inserts in 6-32 UNC thread forms. STI taps produce an oversized thread profile that accepts helical coil inserts, restoring or reinforcing threads in soft or damaged base materials. This tap features an H3 thread limit, a 3-flute design, and a plug chamfer for standard through-hole and blind-hole starting. It is manufactured from high speed steel with a bright finish. Overall length is 2 inches, thread length is 0.6875 inches (11/16 inches), shank diameter is 0.141 inches, and square drive size is 0.110 inches. Machinists and maintenance technicians install this tap by hand or with a tap wrench during repair or production threading operations.
This tap is suited for threading operations that require STI (Screw Thread Insert) hole preparation in materials including aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron, and hardened steel. The plug chamfer - with several leading threads tapered - provides a balanced starting action appropriate for both through-holes and sufficiently deep blind holes. It is used in maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) settings as well as production environments where threaded insert installation is required at the 6-32 UNC size.
Designed for use with helical coil screw thread inserts in 6-32 UNC applications across aluminum, carbon steel, cast iron, and hardened steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap wrenches accepting a 0.110-inch square drive.
This tap is intended for use by machinists or skilled maintenance technicians using a tap wrench or suitable tapping fixture. Apply cutting fluid appropriate to the workpiece material before and during tapping to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Ensure the workpiece is secured before starting and maintain alignment perpendicular to the hole. Do not force the tap - back off periodically to break chips, especially in blind holes.
