The OSG 1772101 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading operations in demanding materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium. It cuts a 4-48 UNC right-hand internal thread to a 2B class of fit and carries an H2 thread limit for consistent tolerance control. The powdered metal construction provides the wear resistance needed for high-alloy workpieces, and the steam oxide coating reduces friction and helps resist galling during the cut. With 2 flutes and a plug chamfer, this tap is suited for through-hole applications where chip evacuation ahead of the tap is essential. Licensed machinists and tool-and-die technicians are the primary installers.
This tap is applied in production and maintenance machining environments where 4-48 UNC threads are required in tough, work-hardening materials. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward through the hole, making it a reliable choice for CNC tapping centers and hand-tapping fixtures on through-holes. The Series 312NI designation identifies it as part of the OSG nickel-alloy and high-temperature-alloy-capable tap line, appropriate for aerospace, medical device, and industrial equipment fabrication.
Designed for cutting 4-48 UNC right-hand internal threads in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium workpieces. Suitable for through-hole applications in CNC tapping centers and manual setups where forward chip evacuation is required.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is aligned to prevent tap breakage in small-diameter, fine-pitch applications. Use a cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material, particularly when threading stainless steel or high-nickel alloys. Inspect the tap for wear regularly, as powdered metal taps in abrasive materials will exhibit predictable but accelerated wear compared to HSS tooling.
