The OSG 1771501 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting 6-32 UNC internal threads in challenging materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a steam oxide coating, this tap handles hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, and titanium without the brittleness associated with standard HSS. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, making it well-suited for through-hole applications. With a 2-inch overall length, a thread length of 0.744 inches, and an H2 thread limit, it produces 2B class of fit threads consistently across production and maintenance work.
This tap is used in precision machining, tool-and-die, and maintenance-repair-operations (MRO) environments where small-diameter thread cutting in tough alloys is routine. The 6-32 UNC size is common in electronics enclosures, instrument panels, and light structural assemblies. A licensed machinist or toolroom technician typically installs threads with this tap either by hand or under power tapping on a drill press or CNC machine. Right-hand cut direction matches standard tapping equipment setups without modification.
Designed as an OEM-style cutting tool for through-hole 6-32 UNC tapping applications in materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, and titanium where powdered metal construction and steam oxide coating are specified.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard shop safety procedures. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and use an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being threaded. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface to avoid tap breakage, especially in harder alloys. For power tapping, verify that the machine's RPM and feed rate are appropriate for the material and tap diameter before starting.
