The OSG 1762901 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 3/8-24 UNF internal threads in ferrous materials. It features a 45-degree right-hand helix that pulls chips up and out of the hole, making it well-suited for blind-hole tapping where chip evacuation is critical. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threads to be cut close to the bottom of a hole without sacrificing thread quality. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap offers good lubricity and wear resistance across a range of steel workpiece materials. Class of fit is 2B with an H5 thread limit for consistent, inspectable results.
This tap is intended for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. The modified bottoming design makes it a practical choice in precision machining, maintenance, and repair applications where threads must be formed near the bottom of a blind hole. This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping procedures. Always secure the workpiece and use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material before starting. Ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface to prevent tap breakage and thread misalignment. Do not exceed the recommended feed rate for the material being tapped, and back off periodically to break chips if tapping by hand.
