The OSG 1761701 is a spiral flute tap designed for threading 7/16-14 UNC holes in a range of ferrous materials. It features a 45-degree right-hand helix and a modified bottoming chamfer, allowing threads to be cut close to the bottom of blind holes with reliable chip evacuation. Built from vanadium high-speed steel with a steam oxide coating, this tap provides improved lubricity and wear resistance under production conditions. The Class 2B thread fit and H7 thread limit make it suitable for standard fastener applications where moderate tolerances are required. It belongs to OSG Series 303 and is sold individually.
This tap is intended for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. The spiral flute design actively pulls chips up and out of the hole, making it well suited for blind-hole tapping operations on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines. The modified bottoming chamfer reduces the number of full-thread lead-in turns needed, which is an advantage when thread depth close to the hole bottom is required. It is appropriate for both job-shop and production environments handling 7/16-14 threaded fastener holes.
Designed for tapping 7/16-14 UNC threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Produces Class 2B internal threads conforming to UNC standards with an H7 thread limit.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist familiar with threading operations and toolholder requirements. Power down and secure the workpiece before mounting or removing the tap from any holder. Use a proper tapping chuck or floating holder to prevent tap breakage from misalignment, and apply an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping oil for the material being machined. Do not exceed the recommended speed range for the material and tap size, and avoid forcing the tap into the hole if resistance is felt.
