The OSG 1759008 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 2-56 UNC internal threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating, it handles hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel without losing edge life. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping flutes clear in through-hole applications. With 2 flutes, an H2 thread limit, and a 2B class of fit, it produces accurate, tolerance-controlled threads suited for precision fastener applications. Licensed machinists, toolroom operators, and production floor technicians working fine-thread small-diameter work are the primary users.
This tap is built for through-hole threading operations in high-strength and difficult-to-machine materials at the 2-56 UNC thread size. It is well suited for aerospace, medical device, electronics, and precision instrument applications where small-diameter fine threads in tough alloys are common. The plug chamfer provides a standard lead-in for production tapping in pre-drilled through holes. Its compact overall length of 1.752 inches makes it compatible with standard small tap holders and CNC tapping heads used in vertical machining centers and drill presses.
Designed for through-hole tapping of 2-56 UNC threads in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. Coolant-through is not supported; external coolant or cutting fluid application is recommended for best results in difficult materials.
This tap is installed by a machinist or toolroom technician in a standard tap holder, collet chuck, or CNC rigid tapping setup. Always ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole is drilled to the correct tap-drill diameter for 2-56 UNC before tapping. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when working with stainless steel or titanium. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use, as small-diameter taps at this thread size are susceptible to breakage if run into blind holes or misaligned setups.
