The OSG 1758408 is a spiral point tap designed for threading through-holes in demanding materials. It cuts a 1/2-13 UNC thread to a 3B class of fit with an H3 thread limit, making it suitable for applications where consistent thread tolerance is critical. The tap is manufactured from powdered metal high-speed steel and finished with a TiCN coating, which extends tool life in abrasive and high-temperature cutting conditions. With 3 flutes and a plug chamfer, it is built for machine tapping in production environments where chip ejection forward through the hole is required. This tap is used by machinists and toolroom technicians in CNC and manual tapping operations.
The OSG 1758408 is suited for through-hole tapping in materials including hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. The plug chamfer configuration requires 3 to 5 threads of lead-in, making it the standard choice for most through-hole production tapping. It is not intended for blind-hole applications where chip clearance is limited. Right-hand thread direction is standard for conventional machine and hand tapping setups. The TiCN coating provides a harder, lower-friction surface than uncoated or TiN alternatives, helping maintain cutting edge integrity when working in tough alloys.
Rated for use in hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel as stated by the manufacturer. Designed for through-hole tapping operations on CNC machining centers, drill presses, and tapping machines with standard 1/2-13 UNC thread requirements.
Installation and use of this tap should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians familiar with thread-forming operations. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle is properly aligned before tapping to avoid tap breakage or thread damage. Use appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel, titanium, or high-nickel alloys. This tap is not suitable for blind-hole applications given its spiral point chip-forward geometry.
