The OSG 1758008 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 3/8-16 UNC right-hand threads in demanding materials. Built from powdered metal and coated with TiCN (titanium carbonitride), this plug-chamfer tap handles hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloys, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. It features 3 flutes with a Class 3B thread fit and an H3 thread limit, making it well suited for precision threading applications where tight tolerances and tool wear resistance are priorities. Spiral point taps are typically installed by machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance technicians working with CNC machines, drill presses, or tapping arms.
This tap is intended for through-hole threading operations in materials that challenge standard high-speed steel taps. The TiCN coating provides improved hardness and lubricity over uncoated tooling, reducing heat buildup and extending tool life when working with stainless steel, titanium, and high-nickel alloys. It is used in production machining, maintenance and repair operations, and toolroom environments. The plug chamfer (3-5 thread lead) makes it appropriate for through-holes where partial thread entry is acceptable and chips can be pushed forward ahead of the tap.
Rated material applications include hardened steel, stainless steel, high-nickel alloy, titanium, alloy steel, and die steel. Designed as an OEM-style replacement spiral point tap for 3/8-16 UNC through-hole threading in production and maintenance environments.
Install in a tapping driver, CNC machine, or drill press set to the appropriate spindle speed for the workpiece material. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is properly aligned to prevent tap breakage or thread form distortion. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped; do not run dry on stainless steel or titanium. Replace the tap at the first sign of cutting resistance increase, squealing, or visual wear on the cutting edge.
