The OSG 1741605 is a spiral point tap designed for threading 5/8-11 UNC holes in a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It features a plug chamfer style, 3 flutes, and a right-hand thread direction with an H3 thread limit and 3B class of fit. The cutting geometry is produced from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) and finished with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) coating that increases surface hardness and reduces friction during cutting. Overall length is 3.374 inches with a thread length of 1.906 inches and a shank diameter of 0.48 inches. This tap is suited for machine tapping applications in production and maintenance environments and is installed by machinists and tool-and-die professionals.
The OSG 1741605 is intended for through-hole tapping operations where the plug chamfer allows the tap to start easily and cut progressively. The TiN coating extends tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials including aluminum, cast iron, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, high-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. It is commonly used in CNC machining centers, drill presses, and manual tapping operations where consistent thread quality and tool longevity are priorities.
Compatible with aluminum, hardened steel, stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, alloy steel, die steel, and cast iron workpieces. Designed as a standard 5/8-11 UNC spiral point tap for use in machine tapping setups requiring a 3B class of fit.
This tap is installed by machinists in machine tapping or manual tapping operations. Secure the tap in a properly sized tap holder or chuck before use, and ensure the workpiece is clamped securely. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material to reduce heat buildup and extend tap life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if thread quality degrades.
