The OSG 1740505 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 10-32 UNF internal threads in a wide range of metallic workpiece materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced friction compared to uncoated tooling. The plug chamfer configuration provides a gradual thread lead-in, making this tap well suited to through-hole tapping applications. With 3 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, the 1740505 follows a standard H3 thread limit and a 2B class of fit, producing threads that meet common inch-series fastener tolerances.
This tap is intended for use in through-hole applications across general metalworking and fabrication environments. Material compatibility includes aluminum, low-, medium-, and high-carbon steels, alloy steel, die steel, stainless steel, hardened steel, and cast iron. It is appropriate for machine tapping operations in production shops, maintenance and repair facilities, and toolroom settings. The compact overall length of 2.374 inches makes it compatible with standard tapping heads and CNC toolholders sized for small-diameter taps.
Designed for use in standard tapping chucks, rigid tapping holders, and CNC machining center toolholders sized for small-diameter straight-shank taps. Compatible with the material types listed in the specifications section.
Machine tapping operations should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Secure the workpiece firmly before tapping and ensure the tap is aligned perpendicular to the work surface to avoid thread runout and tap breakage. Cutting fluid appropriate for the workpiece material should be applied to improve surface finish and extend tool life. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use, as a damaged tap can produce out-of-tolerance threads or break in the hole.
