The OSG 1737201 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC threads in a range of ferrous materials. Built from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap resists wear and reduces friction during through-hole tapping operations. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, keeping flutes clear and allowing consistent thread formation at production speeds. With 3 flutes, an H5 thread limit, and a plug chamfer, it suits both CNC machining centers and hand-tapping applications where controlled thread tolerance is required. Overall length is 2.126 inches with a 0.381-inch thread length.
This tap is intended for right-hand threading in through-hole applications across a variety of workpiece materials including low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, stainless steel, and hardened steel. The steam oxide finish provides a mild lubricity layer that helps reduce galling when tapping stainless and alloy steels. The plug chamfer style distributes cutting load over several leading threads, making it a practical choice for production runs and repair work in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and fabrication environments. It is sold individually and sized for use in standard 8-32 tap holders or collets.
Rated for use in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Designed for through-hole 8-32 UNC threading applications in standard tap holders and collet chucks accepting a 0.168-inch shank diameter.
Installation and use should be performed by a qualified machinist following shop safety procedures. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the spindle or tap wrench is properly aligned before beginning the threading operation. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel or hardened steel, to extend tool life and protect thread quality. Do not reverse feed until the tap has completed its full cutting stroke in through-hole applications.
