The OSG 1736901 is a spiral point plug tap designed for threading 5/16-24 UNF internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. It features a 3-flute spiral point geometry that pushes chips forward ahead of the cut, making it well suited for through-hole tapping applications. Manufactured from vanadium high-speed steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide finish, it offers solid wear resistance and reduced friction during cutting. The H4 thread limit holds tight tolerances to a 2B class of fit, which is the standard for most general-purpose inch-series threaded fastener applications. Right-hand cutting direction. Installed by machinists, maintenance technicians, and tool-and-die professionals.
This tap is used in production and maintenance environments where accurate 5/16-24 UNF threads are required. The spiral point design is optimized for through-hole applications in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. It fits standard tap holders and machine spindles sized for the 0.318-inch shank diameter. Typical use cases include threading bolt holes in brackets, fixtures, machine frames, and similar structural components where a fine unified thread is specified.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use spiral point tap for 5/16-24 UNF through-hole threading applications in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel.
This tap is installed by machinists or maintenance technicians using a standard tapping machine, drill press with tapping attachment, or appropriate hand tap wrench. Power down and secure the workpiece fully before beginning the tapping operation. Use a suitable cutting fluid or tapping compound appropriate for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use and replace if cutting edges are damaged.
