The OSG 1735908 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting 8-32 UNC internal threads in a range of ferrous materials. Manufactured from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a TiCN (Titanium Carbonitride) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and tool life compared to uncoated taps. The plug chamfer geometry guides the tap smoothly into a pre-drilled hole and is suited for through-hole tapping applications. With 3 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, the tap pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting edge, keeping the flutes clear during the cut. It carries a 3B class of fit and an H2 thread limit, producing threads that meet standard tolerance requirements for most fastener assemblies. Machinists, tool-and-die tradespeople, and maintenance technicians are the typical users.
This tap is applied in through-hole tapping of 8-32 UNC threads across low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The spiral point action makes it particularly effective on CNC machining centers and drill presses where consistent chip evacuation forward through the hole is possible. It is well suited for production tapping in sheet metal, structural steel, and machined components where 8-32 fasteners are standard. The TiCN coating extends tool life in abrasive and work-hardening materials such as stainless steel.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use spiral point tap for 8-32 UNC through-hole tapping operations in low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, hardened steel, and stainless steel, per the Series 300 product line specifications.
Tapping operations should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with thread-cutting procedures and appropriate speeds and feeds for the workpiece material. Secure the workpiece fully before beginning; never hold a part by hand during machine tapping. Apply cutting fluid appropriate for the material being tapped to reduce heat buildup and extend tool life. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards when operating drilling or tapping equipment.
