The OSG 1734601 is a spiral point plug tap designed for cutting right-hand internal threads to a 2-56 UNC specification. Built from Vanadium High Speed Steel (HSS-E) with a steam oxide coating, this tap is engineered for threading operations in ferrous materials where heat and wear resistance matter. It features 2 flutes and a plug chamfer that progressively starts the thread for guided entry into through-holes. The H2 thread limit keeps tolerances tight and consistent across production runs. With an overall length of 1.752 inches and a thread length of 0.437 inches, this tap fits standard #2 machine screw applications in both manual and machine tapping setups.
This tap is suited for threading small-diameter holes in light industrial and precision manufacturing environments. Common applications include tapping blind and through-holes in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel workpieces. The 2-56 UNC thread form is standard in instrument panels, electronics enclosures, and small mechanical assemblies where fine fastener engagement is required. A Class 2B fit is the standard commercial thread tolerance class for general-purpose internal threads.
Designed for threading 2-56 UNC internal threads in hardened steel, low-carbon steel, medium-carbon steel, and stainless steel. Compatible with standard tapping chucks and holders sized for a 0.141-inch shank diameter. Not designed for coolant-through applications.
This tap is installed by machinists and precision metalworkers using a tapping chuck, tap wrench, or CNC rigid tapping setup. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the pilot hole diameter matches the recommended tap drill size for 2-56 UNC before starting. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material, particularly when tapping stainless steel. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear between uses, as small-diameter taps are susceptible to breakage under side load or misalignment.
