The OSG 1733205 is a spiral flute tap designed for cutting 7/16-14 UNC internal threads in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel workpieces. Built from vanadium high-speed steel and coated with titanium nitride (TiN), it delivers extended tool life in demanding production and maintenance applications. The modified bottoming chamfer allows threading close to the bottom of blind holes. Three right-hand spiral flutes at a 45-degree helix angle evacuate chips up and out of the hole, reducing the risk of chip packing in interrupted cuts and deep-hole applications. Machinists and toolroom technicians install this tap by hand or with a tapping head on a drill press or CNC machining center.
This tap is suited for threading operations on ferrous metals in both job shop and production environments. The 3B class of fit produces a standard tolerance thread compatible with commercial fastener assemblies. The H3 thread limit designation indicates a ground thread profile held to close tolerances, making it appropriate for precision assemblies where consistent thread engagement is required. It is sold individually and sized for use in general-purpose tapping fixtures as well as manual tap wrenches.
Rated for use in stainless steel, high-carbon steel, low-carbon steel, and medium-carbon steel. Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use tap for Series 303 spiral flute tapping applications requiring a 7/16-14 UNC modified bottoming geometry.
Install in a tap wrench, tapping head, or rigid tapping spindle appropriate for the workpiece setup. Power down or disengage the machine spindle before loading the tap into the holder. Use a cutting fluid rated for the workpiece material — sulfur-based or synthetic cutting oils are common for steel applications. Inspect the tap for chipping or wear before each use and do not force a worn tap, as breakage in a blind hole is difficult to recover.
